Yet not only does it exist, it flourishes, under the watchful eyes of not just private security guards but also state-appointed police personnel posted there to ensure the preservation of law and order and to protect the property rights of the residents — illegal, or ‘extra-legal’ though these rights may be. According to municipal law, Sainik Farms does not — or ought not — to exist. Practically every stick and stone, every brick and Italian marble tile in Sainik Farms is completely unauthorised. In short, an extremely desirable neighbourhood. There is a police chowki manned by helpful policemen who politely assist visitors to locate the particular house they seek. ![]() The roads are well maintained and free of garbage. There are no problems with power and water. It is an enclave of privilege, immune to the myriad ills that beset less advantaged areas of the Capital. It is a colony of gracious residences — many resembling mini-palaces — occupied by industrialists and entrepreneurs, luminaries of the media and the legal profession.
